Michael Redman

PRESIDENT, MYMUSICSOURCE

Guess who.

I just read Adam’s answers above, but he runs a huge music library. How about a smaller boutique library, is there a market for them?

Absolutely! One of my music supervisor friends in the next section, Rudy Chung, has started a wonderful small music library called Pusher Music that specializes in movie trailers. They are doing very well, especially since they have made the right connections in the industry.

There are many areas in which to specialize in the production music arena, and even if you don’t represent a specific genre or style, you can still do quite well. Traditional libraries aren’t usually too versed in the creative use of technology and that leaves the door wide open to you if you are!

What kind of education would be beneficial for this job?

This question has an unusual answer. If I were starting out in this business again, I’d major in computer science and minor in business. I say this because like all businesses, music is largely quickly becoming a tech business. I would also plan on being successful and have a business background because a sizable part of a successful music library is contract related.

Where does the money come from in the production music business?

Generally, the money that’s made in production music comes from licensing fees associated with music usage, music blankets (this is where a company pays a fee for either an entire show, or per year) as well as backend performance royalties. I am talking more here about the people that start libraries, and not the salespeople or producers, because these jobs, even though they are available in the larger libraries, pay according to their size like any business.

Where do I need to live to be in the music library business?

I would say that you should live in NY or LA, where the film, TV, and advertising business is conducted. The lion’s share of the music used in commercial production comes from companies located in these areas. Even though there are other great libraries, like 615 in Nashville, they still have sales representation in these big markets.

What’s the best thing about this business?

I love this business because I’m a composer, and if you are into production music, you can write as much music as you can stand. There was a time when we were in the start-up mode and I was writing about fifteen tracks a week in every style you can think of. There’s nothing like it!

Another great thing about production music is that if you work hard at it, you will more than likely be rewarded for your efforts. It’s not brain surgery!

Does this job have a solid future?

The future of the music library business is very good, from what I can tell. There will be a need for good, solid commercial and affordable production music for the foreseeable future. The music libraries that will flourish will most likely be smart marketers that understand the current music trends. They will be like the smart record labels
